Province Introduces New High School Graduation Requirements for a Stronger Ontario Diploma
Ontario’s plan to modernize the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) for the first time in 25 years has been announced.
That incudes the government’s plan to introduce Ontario’s first financial literacy graduation requirement to ensure students exit Ontario’s school system with both literacy and practical financial literacy skills. We are also reinstating the Math Proficiency Test (MPT) on new educators effective February 2025 to enhance competence in math.
The government will also launch consultations this fall with parents and experts to support Ontario’s plan to implement a new and modernized Home Economics course which includes life skills like nutritious cooking, changing a tire, sewing a button, using first aid, personal responsibility, career prep, basic economics, all of which can prove valuable throughout a student’s life.
For the first time in 13 years, we are making a wholesale revitalization of guidance and career education to support students’ understanding of local labour market needs and pathways to good careers, with a mandate to connect students to local employment. Further, we are providing up to $14 million in new funding for the upcoming school year to launch new career coaching services for all Grade 9 and 10 students and to explore new pathways into STEM and skilled trades.
The government is leaving no stone unturned to help students get back-to-basics, achieve their goals, and make better-informed decisions about their future and career pathways.
