Ontario Working With Remote First Nations to End Reliance on Diesel for Electricity Generation

We are proud to announce a new partnership to establish options to end their reliance on diesel fuel for electricity generation. Ontario is working with First Nations to identify electricity supply options that meet the unique needs of each community.

While 16 remote First Nations will be connected to Ontario’s world-class clean electricity grid by the Wataynikaneyap Power Transmission Project, there are other remote First Nation communities across northern Ontario that continue to rely on costly and unreliable diesel generation for electricity. This reliance on diesel limits opportunities for growth, including new community infrastructure and housing and is a significant source of noise and emissions.
