Ontario Reducing Costs for Future Homeowners
The government has announced a series of actions to cut costs to build homes and attract job-creating investment in Ontario.
Unlike the Liberals, who maintained regulatory red tape that discouraged residential constructions, our government is implementing a comprehensive suite of reforms through the Ontario Energy Board (OEB) that reduces upfront capital costs for housing developers and businesses when creating new connections to the electricity grid.
We are taking practical steps, including implementing all recommendations from the OEB Housing Connections Report, to dramatically reduce the barriers to home building, job-creating investment, and agricultural expansion:
- Minister Lecce is requesting that the OEB extend the amount of time electricity investments can be paid back—just like extending the amortization of a mortgage—from 25 years to 40 years.
- Establishing a capacity allocation model that considers multi-customer, multi-year projects. I.e. a ‘pay for what you use’ policy.
- Extending the connection horizon to 15 years to provide much-needed clarity for when connection horizon extensions should be required.
The government will not follow the Liberals, who hiked energy costs and skyrocketed bills by over 300%. Instead, we are acting decisively to reduce costs and build out a reliable energy grid for our families and future generations.
