Ontario Plans for More Energy Generation to Meet Soaring Demand
The government has announced the next steps in Ontario’s plan to secure reliable and affordable energy for families and businesses over the next 25 years as energy demand soars. The government has asked Ontario Power Generation (OPG) to begin discussions with Indigenous, community, and municipal leaders in Port Hope, Haldimand County, and St. Clair Township to determine community support for new energy generation of all kinds, including nuclear. This marks the next step in the largest expansion of electricity generation in Ontario in over 30 years.
While the province is already on track to meet electricity demands through 2035 with major projects already announced—including the G7’s first small modular reactor and the largest competitive energy procurement in Ontario’s history—the province will need 16,000 additional megawatts (MW) of generation, alongside expanded transmission infrastructure, to meet demand through 2050.
This initiative also reinforces our government’s forward-thinking strategy of working closely with Indigenous and municipal communities, ensuring their input shapes Ontario’s energy future. Unlike the previous Liberal government, which left our energy system unprepared for growth, we are delivering an approach that prioritizes affordability and technological innovation over taxation.
