Ontario Launches Plan to Boost Math, Writing and Reading Skills
Education Minister Stephen Lecce and PA Patrice Barnes announced Ontario’s plan to boost literacy and math skills by investing more than $180M in targeted supports for students in the classroom and at home.
The government’s plan is focused on elevating standards tied to foundational competencies, driving consistency across schools, and focusing student’s time in the classroom on building life, job and critical thinking skills.
Just as all provinces and advanced economies have shown, recent EQAO data confirms Ontario’s students require additional supports to build foundational literacy and math skills. This is why the government is providing the funding to support the hiring of over 1,000 additional specialized reading and math teachers to improve performance.
The government is taking clear and effective action to challenge the status quo by overhauling the Language and Math curricula, hiring specialized staff, elevating standards and training for staff, and expanding new resources for students to boost literacy and math skills benefiting generations of students in the province.
