April 20, 2026
The Ontario government is investing $180,000 to expand apprenticeship training at Georgian College of Applied Arts and Technology, which will equip more people in Simcoe North with the tools and resources they need to land good paying, in-demand careers in the skilled trades. The funding is part of the government’s annual investment in the Apprenticeship Capital Grant program to improve and modernize equipment and training facilities that support hands-on learning for students and apprentices.
“Ontario’s skilled trades are vital to our economy and offer meaningful and well-paying careers,” said Jill Dunlop, MPP for Simcoe North. This investment in Georgian College of Applied Arts and Technology in Midland is a significant step forward in strengthening skilled trades training in our region. By enhancing training capacity and modernizing learning environments, we are helping ensure apprentices gain the hands-on experience they need to succeed. Supporting programs like these not only benefits students but also helps local employers address workforce demands. I’m proud to see this funding through the Apprenticeship Capital Grant supporting growth and opportunity right here in our community.”
With funding from the Apprenticeship Capital Grant, Georgian College of Applied Arts and Technology will be investing in new CAD computers for a computer lab at its Midland campus, along with minor room improvements such as updated electrical and network connections and a new network switch. These enhancements will modernize the hands‑on learning environment by providing all apprentice students with access to industry‑standard equipment. This investment will help reduce financial barriers for learners and support approximately 600 apprentices each year by ensuring training environments reflect current industry practices.
These upgrades will strengthen training that reflects current employer needs and help prepare apprentices for careers as industrial electricians, plumbers, marine engine technicians and small engine technicians, while supporting training providers in keeping pace with evolving technologies and industry demands.
“Under the leadership of Premier Ford, our government is proud to invest in programs that modernize training and strengthen Ontario’s apprenticeship system,” said David Piccini, Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development. “At a time when many people are looking for stability and opportunity, these investments are helping more people train for rewarding, in-demand careers close to home, while ensuring employers can find the skilled workers they need to fill critical labour gaps.”
“This investment marks an important step in our ongoing efforts to strengthen training capacity and elevate the quality of apprenticeship programs for our community,” said Amanda Duncan MA, Academic Project Manager, Georgian College. “The new computer lab at Midland campus will give apprentices invaluable access to state-of-the-art technology and software, aligning their experiences with current industry standards. By providing this resource, we are ensuring that our apprentice learners are equipped with the tools and knowledge needed to successfully meet their learning outcomes and thrive in their chosen trade.”
Ontario continues to take action to protect workers, businesses and communities by investing in skills training that responds to labour market needs. This investment will continue to develop our world class workforce, connect employers to skilled workers, support economic growth and build a stronger, more competitive and resilient Ontario.
