Ontario Greenlights Pickering Nuclear Generating Station Refurbishment to Create Nearly 37,000 Jobs
November 26, 2025
Ontario is officially greenlighting the refurbishment and 38-year life extension of the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station. Once complete, Pickering will deliver up to 2,200 MW of clean electricity — enough to power 2.2 million homes.
This announcement launches a major jobs plan that will create nearly 37,000 jobs, protecting Ontario workers and strengthening the province’s long-term energy security. The refurbishment will extend the facility’s operations to deliver affordable, reliable and clean power for up to 38 years, allowing Ontario to continue leveraging its nuclear advantage to expand export opportunities, support good-paying jobs and build a more competitive, resilient, and self-reliant economy in the face of U.S. tariffs. Approximately 90 per cent of project spending will occur within Canada — supporting local businesses and delivering economic benefits across the province. OPG will deliver the project using the same disciplined planning, oversight, and partnership model that has kept the Darlington refurbishment on-time and on-budget.
The Liberals planned to shut down the facility, turning their backs on thousands of Canadian workers and Ontario’s supply chain. It is clear that only Premier Ford and our government can be trusted to protect this Canadian success story – clean technology built by Canadians for Canadians.
