Ontario Fast-Tracks Red Lake Transmission Line and Launches New Hydroelectricity Program
April 23, 2026
Ontario is fast-tracking the Red Lake Transmission Line by declaring it a priority project and designating Hydro One to build it, alongside launching the new Northern Hydro Program. These initiatives will expand electricity infrastructure in Northern Ontario and help power one of the most promising mining regions in Canada, enabling new projects and major investment across the North.
As electricity demand in the Red Lake region could increase by as much as 525 per cent — rising from approximately 120 megawatts today to more than 750 megawatts by 2050, and with a pipeline of up to 41 potential new mines, Ontario is taking decisive action to ensure reliable, affordable power is in place to support that growth. By advancing critical transmission infrastructure and securing hydroelectric generation, Ontario is strengthening energy security and positioning Northern Ontario as a globally competitive destination for investment.
Ontario’s plan to protect the province is delivering a reliable, affordable and clean electricity system anchored by hydro and nuclear — the backbone of our grid — while enabling critical mineral development, supporting workers and communities, and driving long-term economic growth in the North.
