Ontario Advancing Plan to Refurbish Pickering Nuclear Generating Station

The Ontario government has announced that with electricity demand expected to grow by 75% by 2050, our government has approved the next step towards the refurbishment of the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station. This project will generate over 2,000 MW of clean electricityenough to power two million homescreate 11,000 jobs during construction and contribute $19.4 billion to Ontario’s GDP. The refurbishment’s Project Definition Phase is already underway, supported by OPG’s $4.1 billion budget, part of a total investment of $6.2 billion to date.

As part of this work, Minister Lecce and OPG will sign a $2.1 billion contract with CanAtom, creating more than 2,400 jobs across the province. Local suppliers across Ontario will benefit, including BWXT Canada in Peterborough and Cambridge, Cameco in Port Hope, and NWI in Toronto.

Unlike the previous Liberal government that planned to shutter the Pickering Generating Station and hiked hydro rates by 300%, Premier Ford is demonstrating leadership with a focus on affordable energy for the next 25 years.
