Ontario Addressing Abandoned Oil and Gas Wells

Minister Graydon Smith announced that the government is investing $26 million to address the risks posed by abandoned oil and gas wells in the province.

The funding will be used to develop and implement a province-wide strategy that includes identifying and plugging old wells in order to keep Ontario communities safe.

An additional $2.5 million will go directly to the Municipality of Chatham-Kent to assist with costs associated with emergency management from the 2021 explosion in the community of Wheatley.
