New “As of Right” Rules a First in Canada to Attract Health Care Professionals to Work in Ontario

The government is leading the country by making it easier for out-of-province health care workers to practice in Ontario. With new “As of Right” rules, health care workers already registered or licensed in Canada will be able to practice in Ontario immediately, without having to first register with one of Ontario’s regulatory health colleges.

In addition, the government will also be helping hospitals and other health organizations to increase staffing levels by allowing certain health care workers – including nurses, paramedics, respiratory therapists, and others – to work outside of their typical roles on a short-term basis, as long as they have the knowledge, skill and judgement to do so.

With our new “As of Right” rules, Ontario is the first province in Canada to allow health care workers from across the country to overcome unnecessary bureaucratic delays so they can immediately start providing care in Ontario.

In addition, Ontario will introduce legislation that, if passed, would give hospitals and other health organizations the flexibility to temporarily increase staffing when they need to fill vacancies or manage periods of high patient volume by allowing health care professionals, including nurses, paramedics, respiratory therapists, and others, to work outside of their regular responsibilities or settings.
