Governments Invest over $5.9 Million in the City of Orillia’s and the Town of Midland’s Water Infrastructure

SIMCOE NORTH — Investments in key infrastructure projects build strong and healthy communities across Canada. From roads and community centres – to public transit and water and wastewater systems – reliable infrastructure provides communities with opportunities to grow and develop today so that they can be resilient in the face of tomorrow.

That is why both levels of government have been taking decisive action to support families and businesses, while boosting economic growth, improving quality of life, creating jobs, and building strong, healthy communities across the province.

Today, Jill Dunlop, MPP for Simcoe North announced $2,280,870 in joint funding for a project in the City of Orillia and $3,651,938.75 for a project in the Town of Midland to improve drinking water infrastructure.

“The province is proud to invest over $1.9 million toward Ontario’s drinking water infrastructure projects, two of which are right here in Simcoe North,” said Jill Dunlop, MPP for Simcoe North. “This funding through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) will assist both the City of Orillia and the Town of Midland in providing increased access to clean, reliable drinking water while building strong communities, and maintaining a healthy environment for residents. These kinds of water projects are crucial to our ongoing efforts to create sustainable communities with resilient infrastructure.”

This investment is being made through the Green Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program, a cost-shared, application-based infrastructure funding opportunity.

The Government of Ontario is investing over $1.9 million toward this project while the Government of Canada is contributing more than $3.9 million.

“I welcome investments in the water infrastructure in Orillia and Midland by multiple levels of government. Ensuring safe sources of clean drinking water is a priority for all of us and is essential to maintaining healthy and vibrant communities,” said Adam Chambers, MP for Simcoe North.

“Today’s green infrastructure investments will bring long-lasting benefits to thousands of residents across Ontario. These 144 projects will provide increased access to clean water, improve the reliability of our water systems, and protect health and safety” said the Honourable Kinga Surma, Ontario’s Minister of Infrastructure. “This investment is just one of the many ways our government is building a cleaner, more sustainable Ontario for today, and for generations to come.”

The provinces investment of $760,213.97 to the Chlorine System Rehabilitation project in Orillia involves upgrading the chlorine gas system including improved safety through the installation of two automatic shutoff valves, a new ventilation system interlocked to the gas detection system, interlock on the hydronic heaters, and other initiatives that will all contribute to access to clean water for residents.

The provinces investment of $ 1,217,191.19 to the Everton and Lescaut Booster Pump Station Upgrades project in Midland includes upgrades of the duty pumps and associated hydraulic modeling at both Lescaut and Everton Booster Pumps stations. The full scope of this project is unknown at this time, the engineering and design phases will be completed as part of this project. Both these projects will contribute to ensuring that residents continue to have reliable access to clean drinking water, while enhancing the reliability and capacity of the local water infrastructure systems.

These projects are a part of a joint investment towards 144 water infrastructure projects across Ontario that will provide residents with safer and more reliable drinking water and drinking water infrastructure. The Government of Ontario is providing more than $140.5 million in these projects, Infrastructure Canada is investing more than $190.2 million, while recipients are contributing more than $108.5 million.

Under the Investing in Canada Plan, the federal government is investing more than $180 billion over 12 years in public transit projects, green infrastructure, social infrastructure, trade and transportation routes, and Canada’s rural and northern communities.
Over the last six years, the Government of Canada has invested over $18.6 billion toward more than 4,180 infrastructure projects across Ontario.
During that period, over $44 billion has been invested in communities by Infrastructure Canada across the country to support world-class infrastructure projects, including over $4.4 billion for community drinking water and wastewater infrastructure projects.
Ontario is investing over $10.2 billion under the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program to improve public transit; community, culture and recreation; green, and rural and northern community and other priority infrastructure.
Over the next 10 years, Ontario has planned infrastructure investments of over $148 billion to support the construction, rehabilitation and modernization of new schools, hospitals, public transit, roads, bridges, and access to quality, reliable high-speed internet.
These investments are part of the Ontario government’s plan to build Ontario by getting shovels in the ground on critical infrastructure projects that will stimulate job creation and boost economic growth, while protecting health and safety to build strong, resilient communities.
